Regenerative Farming: Widely known as "A conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming." We are focused on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle and strengthening the health and vitality of our farm soil. We put a lot of effort into making sure our farm is carbon capturing, helping our environment and the air we breathe.
No-Till Farming: We never till the soil on our farm. Tilling soil disturbs and destroys the beneficial microbiome of the soil that we're encouraging to grow and thrive. Instead of tilling, we take our cover crop seed (see below) and drill it down into our soil, working hard to not disturb the living ecosystem for healthy soil!
Cover Crop: We plant cover crop throughout our entire farm, aiming to never have bare dirt. This is a blend of many types of plants and grasses, specifically designed to improve the soil on our farm so that we can capture carbon from the air and pull it back into the earth where it belongs. This cover crop also forms the basis of our livestock's diet, just as nature intended. We never feed our animals grains, corn, soy, molasses or any of the other crazy things that are often fed to livestock, and we never give them antibiotics or hormones.
Livestock Rotation: We attempt to mimic nature by rotating livestock around our property incrementally. First, the cows move through, then the chickens come through, eating the bugs left behind in the cattle manure, and finally, the pigs come last, rooting up dormant grass seeds in the process. Our livestock are 100% pasture-raised, as nature intended, and we never treat them with antibiotics or hormones. They are never fed corn, soy, or any other crazy fillers! We are a non-GMO farm.
Mob Grazing: Imagine a huge herd of buffalo on the plains. They came through, ate the prairie grasses, and then moved on. We want all of the..ahem..."outputs" from the animals (yep, I'm talking pee and poop) on the soil, and then we want to move our livestock off that sections of land so they don't compact the soil, or overgraze, again disrupting the soil microbiome.
Extreme Composting: We utilize a very specific form of composting that allows us to grow an ideal ratio of microbiology (a 1:1 ratio of fungus to bacterial) in just 6 months, that would otherwise take us 12 years to accomplish using more conventional composting techniques. We use this compost out in our fields and also in our soil-based greenhouses to help us grow the most nutrient-dense veggies (for us) and cover crop (for our livestock).
Black Soldier Flies: Along our weekly delivery route, we pick up food waste from our restaurant partners, food that would otherwise be destined for the landfill, and feed it to our Black Soldier Flies. They break down the waste, preventing the excess methane that otherwise would have been created from that waste at the landfill. They multiply, and then we feed the high protein and calcium-rich grubs to our chickens (our chickens are definitely NOT vegetarians :).
Soil-Based Greenhouses: We grow all of our Vine Crops in soil, just as nature intended, but inside greenhouses, so we can protect our plants from hail and bugs. Growing in soil provides high levels of nutritional density and veggies that taste like they were grown in Granny's backyard. We intentionally bring bees and all sorts of other beneficial insects into our greenhouses to keep the bad pests away. These hard-working insects allow us to grow without using any dangerous chemicals or pesticides. Our greenhouses also allow us to grow year-round... talk about fringe benefits!
Water Conservation: We consider water an incredibly valuable and scarce resource! We do everything we can to use the least amount of water possible while simultaneously decreasing water runoff from our land. For our vegetable growing, we use less than 8% of the water compared to traditional field growers. For our livestock, we actually use less than 2% of water compared to conventional feedlots. Since we do not spray any fertilizers, pesticides or chemicals on our pastures, choosing instead to rely on nature and biology of the soil, we have no dangerous water runoff from our farm. Additionally, because we always have cover crop (aka - soil armor) growing and never overgraze our fields, our soil becomes better and better every day at retaining natural rainfall on the farm.
Soil Conservation: Soil is the key element that makes it possible to feed Earth's seven billion-plus people. As discussed in National Geographic, "Humanity continues to neglect the land we use for food production. One-third of the world's soil has already been damaged by water and wind erosion. Deforestation, loss of nutrients, and pollution are also doing damage." By our own actions, we are losing soil faster than nature can create it. By following the methodology and philosophies of pioneers like Gabe Brown, Ray Archuleta, Dr. Allen Wliiams and David Montgomery, and implementing no-till approach on our farm combined with rotating livestock through the specific cover crop, we can rehabilitate our soil, improving it season to season, as opposed to degrading it.
Carbon Capture: Soils contain more than twice the amount of carbon stored in the atmosphere. Most of this carbon resides in deep soils, where it can be stored for millennia. Recent studies show that root activity in relatively young soils could result in carbon capture. By implementing a no-till practice, we expect to be carbon negative in our cattle raising (based upon data from similar operations by our mentors), achieving carbon sequestration in our soil. This not only makes our soil healthier but also improves the health of our environment.
